Black Thought, the renowned wordsmith and MC of The Roots, recently appeared on Questlove Supreme to discuss music and his new book, “The Upcycled Self.” During the podcast, he gave a nod to legendary artists like Special Ed, Kool Keith, and Greg Nice, who have influenced his work over the years.
However, Black Thought also showed admiration for younger talents in the hip-hop scene. He praised Mach-Hommy, citing his unique style within the Griselda family movement. Additionally, Black Thought highlighted his appreciation for Your Old Droog, mentioning that their connection grew from a chance meeting during the PRhyme tour.
Interestingly, Droog played a pivotal role in connecting Black Thought and Mach-Hommy, and the trio has been collaborating in the studio recently.
On a previous episode of Questlove Supreme, Questlove himself had the pleasure of hosting André 3000 of OutKast. During their conversation, Questlove expressed awe at the brilliance of OutKast’s music, particularly recalling his reaction to their 1998 hit, “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.” He marveled at the band’s genius and the impact their music had on him, emphasizing the importance of their stream-of-conscious thinking and unique approach to music.
The podcast serves as a platform to appreciate both legendary and emerging artists, showcasing the ever-evolving landscape of hip-hop and its enduring influence on artists like Black Thought and Questlove.
