Rising rap artist Mello Buckzz, a native of Chicago, is facing unimaginable heartbreak following a mass shooting that took place during the release celebration of her latest album, Hollyhood. The 21-year-old rapper, known for her raw lyricism and ties to Chicago’s drill scene, had been celebrating her new project at Artis Lounge on the city’s Near North Side when the tragedy unfolded late Wednesday night, July 2.
Around 11 p.m., according to reports from NBC Chicago, a dark-colored vehicle pulled up outside the venue and opened fire into a crowd of partygoers gathered near the entrance. The horrific drive-by shooting left four people dead and 18 others injured, marking one of the most devastating nights in Mello Buckzz’s young career.
Among the victims were two of the people closest to her: her boyfriend and her best friend. In a series of emotional Instagram Stories posted shortly after the incident, Mello poured out her grief.
“We was having so much fun in our private little life… couldn’t leave each other alone. Glued to my hip every day. There’s not a night we didn’t spend together,” she wrote, expressing disbelief over her boyfriend’s passing. “I held your hand until I couldn’t… I don’t get it. I’m f**ked up.”
Speaking on the loss of her friend, she added, “Damn shorty, my mfn dog. My brother. You and Vonte were my only two people. I’m so lost… I can’t believe I lost both y’all in one night.”
Photos from the scene show a chilling aftermath: blood-stained pavement, scattered clothing and shoes, and a heavy police presence as emergency responders worked to assist the injured. The vehicle involved reportedly fled the scene immediately, and as of now, no suspects have been arrested. Authorities say the case remains under active investigation.
The album release event was meant to mark a significant milestone for Mello Buckzz, who’s been gaining momentum on the Chicago rap scene. Hollyhood—a project that blends street realism with emotional depth—was set to push her further into the spotlight. But instead, the night became one of pain and loss.
In the wake of the tragedy, Mello has leaned on her faith and her fans for support. “Prayers up for all my sisters. God, please wrap your arms around every last one of them,” she shared. “All I can do is talk to God and pray.”
The senseless violence has shaken not just Mello but the wider Chicago music community and the families of the victims. Her message to the public was clear: “I don’t wish this type of pain on nobody… dam my f**king crew.”
Mello Buckzz had just begun to find her rhythm in the industry. Now, she’s navigating both the weight of grief and the pressure of a rising career. While the wounds are fresh, her words echo with strength and a fierce desire to honor the lives of those she lost.
