Mariah Carey Confirms New Album Is Finished, Teases Summery Second Single

Mariah Carey is officially wrapping up the next chapter in her legendary career, revealing that her 16th studio album is finally complete. The pop and R&B icon, originally from Huntington, New York, made the announcement during a live conversation at Apple Music Studios in Culver City, California. She sat down with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden to celebrate Apple Music’s 10th anniversary, where the topic quickly shifted to her new music.

While she remained tight-lipped about most of the details, Mariah confirmed the album is finished and will feature 11 or 12 tracks, including the heartfelt ballads she’s known for. “I’m trying not to say too much,” she said, quoting one of her older lyrics to tease what’s ahead. “But yes—the album’s coming, and I’m very excited.” She also hinted that the next single is on the way and gave fans a little preview of what to expect: a fun, upbeat, summery vibe that she’s clearly loving.

The first single from the project, “Type Dangerous,” dropped earlier this year through Gamma. The new music company was founded by former Apple Music executive Larry Jackson. The track samples Eric B. & Rakim’s 1986 classic “Eric B. Is President” and has already earned Mariah her 50th Billboard Hot 100 hit. She even performed it live with Rakim at the 2025 BET Awards, where she took home her very first BET Award—the prestigious Ultimate Icon Award.

Reflecting on the song, Mariah explained that the idea came to her organically. “I’ve always loved that track, but I never thought about flipping it,” she said. “Then we were out in Aspen, and the song came on in a restaurant. I just lit up—I love this song! We ended up in the studio a couple months later and made it happen.”

Beyond Mariah, the night at Apple Music Studios was filled with musical energy, with appearances from Chance the Rapper, Ciara, Dominic Fike, Vince Staples, Hit-Boy, Kamasi Washington, and more—all gathered to mark a decade of Apple Music’s impact on the industry.

As for Mariah, the excitement in her voice says it all. After decades in the spotlight, she’s still finding new ways to evolve while staying true to the sound fans adore. With a new album ready and another single on the way, Mimi’s moment isn’t just a comeback—it’s a celebration of her enduring legacy.
