The decades-old mystery of who killed Tupac Shakur took a big turn when Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested in 2023 for the rapper’s murder. But now, the trial has been pushed back nearly a year, leaving fans waiting even longer for answers.
Originally set to begin next month, the trial will now start in February 2026. Judge Carli Kierny made the decision after Davis’ lawyers claimed they had evidence proving he wasn’t even in Las Vegas when Tupac was shot in a drive-by in 1996. They also said there were witnesses who could challenge the prosecution’s story.
Davis has pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing that others were responsible for Tupac’s death. His lawyer, Carl Arnold, pointed the finger at Reggie Wright Jr., a former security worker for Death Row Records, the label owned by Suge Knight. Knight was driving the car Tupac was in when the shooting happened. Wright, however, denies any involvement, calling the accusations baseless.
Prosecutors believe the shooting was linked to a fight earlier that night. 2pac, Suge Knight, and their crew got into a brawl at the MGM Grand hotel with a group that included Davis and his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Security footage showed Tupac and Knight attacking Anderson near an elevator. Authorities say this fight sparked the deadly shooting.
Later that night, a white Cadillac pulled up next to Knight’s BMW at a red light, and someone inside opened fire. Tupac was shot four times and died six days later. According to police, Davis was in the Cadillac and passed a gun to one of the men in the backseat as revenge for the earlier fight.
Keefe Davis was arrested in September 2023, marking the first time anyone had been charged in Tupac’s killing. Since then, his legal team has been fighting the charges, even claiming that Davis had made a deal with law enforcement years ago, which should have protected him from prosecution. However, the court ruled that there was no evidence of such an agreement.
While Davis isn’t accused of pulling the trigger, many believe his nephew, Anderson, was the shooter. Anderson was killed in a separate gang-related shooting in 1998, further complicating the case.
With new witnesses coming forward and the trial delayed, the world will have to wait a little longer to see if Tupac’s murder mystery will finally be solved.
