The Indiana Fever played against the Connecticut Sun in Indianapolis on Monday, May 20, losing their first three games of the season.
On Monday, they stayed close, tying the score at 26 after one, taking their first halftime lead of the season at 44-41, and rallying from a 60-51 third-quarter deficit to close within 64-61 after three.
Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, and Kelsey Mitchell scored 17 points each, leading five Fever players in double figures. NaLyssa Smith added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Aliyah Boston had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Temi Fagbenle contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
During Monday night’s 88-84 loss to the Connecticut Sun, Clark rolled her left ankle midway through the second quarter of her fourth WNBA game, stumbling and losing her footing, causing pain to her ankle. She was down on the floor for the entire play before managing to stand up and walk off, heading into the locker room. Caitlin Clark returned after a few minutes; she then started the second half and finished the game.
The Connecticut Sun and the Indiana Fever fought hard in a back-and-forth final 7:15 after Clark’s big 3. However, Harris’ late scoring spree gave Connecticut an 82-78 lead with 2:04 to go. Layups from Mitchell and Clark tied the score with 1:04 to go, but Bonner broke free for a layup with 41 seconds remaining. After Caitlin Clark found an open Boston for a tying mid-range jumper 12 seconds later, the Sun made four straight free throws to close it out 88-84. Even with Alyssa Thomas scoring 24 points, DeWanna Bonner scoring 22 points, and DiJonai Carrington scoring 13 points or the suns, the still couldn’t defeat the Fever.
Next, the Sun will head home on Thursday, May 23, to face Minnesota, and the Fever will begin a three-game West Coast swing on Wednesday, May 22, in Seattle.
