Long Island, New York group De La Soul fans are probably extremely excited right now, as the legendary hip-hop group is offering a glimpse into their fight to get their music back on streaming platforms with their new documentary, “Chapter 3.” The original members of the group are Kelvin Mercer “Posdnuos”, David Jolicoeur “Trugoy the Dove”, and Vincent Mason “Maseo.”
After finally releasing their entire discography on streaming services in March 2023, De La Soul is delving into the story behind this hard-won victory. Sample clearance issues and a disagreement with their former label, Tommy Boy, had kept their music offline for years. Thankfully, Reservoir Media’s acquisition of Tommy Boy in 2021 paved the way for their first six albums to hit streaming platforms again under Chrysalis Records.pen_spark
“Chapter 3” takes viewers on a journey through the iconic studio sessions leading up to the 2023 re-release and remastering of De La Soul’s music. This marked a momentous occasion, as it was the first time in nearly three decades that Posdnuos, Dave, Maseo, and producer Prince Paul were all back in the studio together for a De La Soul project.

The final live stream on June 14th will transition to the official music video premiere of “The Magic Number” at 3:30 PM EST. This video explores the interplay between De La Soul’s signature soulfulness and artificial intelligence (AI), a theme they previously touched on in their AOI albums. Interestingly, the video utilizes AI-generated art, highlighting the merits of AI in art creation while also subtly suggesting its limitations without the human touch.
“Chapter 3” began production while Dave was still alive, making its completion bittersweet after his passing in February 2023. Posdnuos and Maseo’s dedication to the De La Soul legacy shines through in their continued efforts, and “The Magic Number” serves as a poignant reminder of the group’s final moments as a trio.
