March 2024 was a solid month for hip hop releases, with a good mix of established and rising stars dropping new projects. ScHoolboy Q returned with “Blue Lips,” his first album in a few years, while veteran producer Mike teamed up with Tony Seltzer for “Pinball.” Up-and-coming artists like That Mexican OT (“Texas Technician”) also made their mark. There were interesting releases beyond just albums too, with Latina rapper Arianna Puello putting out her girl power anthem “Amazona” for International Women’s Day.
March also saw some genre-bending projects gain recognition. For instance, rapper Tyla’s self-titled debut brought a vibrant energy by infusing hip hop with the South African sound of Amapiano. Future & Metro Boomin dropped as well, the highly anticipated collaboration, “We Don’t Trust You,” dominated the later part of the month. Tierra Whack Fans eagerly awaited the release of her full-length album, “World Wide Whack,” after her critically acclaimed 2018 EP. Kenny Mason, the Atlanta rapper’s sophomore album, “9,” promised a further exploration of his unique blend of genres, including shoegaze and grunge rock. And Shabazz Palaces, the Seattle duo released “Exotic Birds of Prey,” showcasing their signature abstract and intellectual style.
