In an exciting collaboration, acclaimed actress and filmmaker Issa Rae will be producing a new buddy comedy film starring the talented duo Award winning Singer-songwriter and actress Keke Palmer, along with Grammy-winning artist SZA.
Issa Rae, the creator and star of the acclaimed HBO series “Insecure”, is no stranger to producing groundbreaking projects. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1984, Rae has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. She has won numerous accolades, including a Peabody Award, a NAACP Image Award, and multiple Emmy nominations.
Keke Palmer, a multi-talented actress, singer, and entrepreneur from Harvey, Illinois, has an impressive filmography that includes roles in “Akeelah and the Bee”, “Hustlers”, and the recent Jordan Peele horror film “Nope”. The 29-year-old has also made history, becoming the first Black woman to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Game Show for her work on the NBC reboot of “Password”.
SZA, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, is set to make her acting debut in this upcoming buddy comedy. Born Solána Imani Rowe in St. Louis, Missouri in 1992, SZA has captivated audiences with her soulful and introspective music. Her debut album “Ctrl” was a critical and commercial success, earning her multiple Grammy nominations and certifying her status as one of the most unique and soulful voices in R&B. SZA has won gained 45 awards and 178 nominations; including four Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, six Billboard Music Awards, 5 BET Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards,an American Music Award, a MTV Video Music Awards, and more.
The film, which is being produced for TriStar Pictures, will reunite Palmer and SZA, who previously collaborated when Palmer hosted “Saturday Night Live” in December 2022, with SZA as the musical guest. Their on-screen chemistry and playful dynamic during that appearance have now led to this exciting new project.
The buddy comedy will be directed by Lawrence Lamont, who has previously worked with Rae on her Max series “Rap Sh!t”, and the screenplay will be written by Syreeta Singleton, the showrunner of that same series. This creative team, along with Rae’s production company HOORAE, promises to deliver a unique and engaging film that showcases the talents and chemistry between Keke Palmer and SZA.
