Saturday Night Live threw a huge 50th-anniversary party on Peacock that mixed funny sketches with awesome music. One of the best parts was when SNL stars Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer brought back their old characters, Marty and Bobbi Culp. They took the stage as two quirky music teachers and treated everyone to a mix of old and new songs.
Marty and Bobbi kicked things off with playful banter and modern slang. At one point, Marty joked, “Are Lamar and Drake in the house? Maybe you two can hug it out tonight in the name of love and fellowship? No? Not in hell!” They then rocked out a funny cover of Kendrick Lamar’s hit “Not Like Us,” a song famous for taking playful digs at Drake. They even stretched out a part of the song, repeating the “A Minor” line in a silly, over-the-top way. During the show, they also sang favorites like Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby,” Kim Petras and Sam Smith’s “Unholy,” and wrapped up with a cover of Chappell Roam’s “Good Luck, Babe.” In one wild moment, even Meryl Streep joined the fun by flipping them off stage!
The night wasn’t just about Marty and Bobbi. Doechii, a rapper from Compton, made a brief appearance and performed a quick cover of one of her Grammy-winning songs, adding a cool, modern twist to the act.
But the party didn’t stop there. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean reunited two-thirds of the Fugees and performed several songs with help from The Roots. Lil Wayne wowed the crowd with a medley of hits like “Lollipop,” “Mrs. Officer,” and “A Milli,” all introduced by Dave Chappelle. Many more stars, including Nirvana with Post Malone, Jack White, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, and Sabrina Carpenter, lit up the stage, making it a night full of surprises.
Even though Kendrick Lamar wasn’t at the SNL special, he recently headlined the Super Bowl halftime show. His performance, which featured guests like SZA, Mustard, Serena Williams, and Samuel L. Jackson, was watched by 133.5 million people. That makes it the most-watched Super Bowl show ever, even beating Michael Jackson’s famous 1993 performance!
Overall, the SNL anniversary special mixed silly humor with great music. It was a night that brought together old favorites and new stars, proving once again that SNL knows how to put on a show that everyone can enjoy.
