Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z, is set to make her voice acting debut in the upcoming Lion King prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King. Blue Ivy will lend her voice to the character of Kiara, the daughter of King Simba (voiced by Donald Glover) and Queen Nala, portrayed by her own mother, Beyoncé. Director Barry Jenkins expressed his delight in Blue Ivy’s voice, citing her narration in Matthew Cherry’s Oscar-winning animated short film “Hair Love” as the inspiration. Jenkins remarked, “The quality of her voice, I just thought it felt like this character.”
Last year, Blue Ivy joined Beyoncé onstage during the Renaissance tour, which ended in October; She already had a Grammy, winning Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl,” a single by her mother. Beyoncé herself holds the record for the most Grammy wins in history, with an impressive tally of 32.
The Lion King remake in 2019, directed by Barry Jenkins, will explore Mufasa’s original story and his childhood with brother Scar, with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative mind behind Hamilton.
