In a remarkable testament to its enduring influence, MF DOOM and Madlib’s groundbreaking album “Madvillainy” has achieved gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), nearly two decades after its initial release. Originally unleashed on March 22, 2004, under Stones Throw Records, “Madvillainy” now joins the esteemed ranks of gold-certified albums, having surpassed half a million copies sold as of Monday, March 25, 2024.
Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf recently reflected on the album’s 20-year journey, offering insights into its creation and impact. He revealed that the album’s beats were crafted by Madlib in a makeshift studio dubbed “The Bomb Shelter,” situated in Wolf’s basement. Meanwhile, MF DOOM laid down his iconic vocals in Wolf’s bedroom, which also served as the location for the album’s renowned photo shoot, expertly captured by photographer @ecoleye.
The celebrations surrounding “Madvillainy” didn’t stop there. Wolf recounted the album’s modest release party held at The Fonda, a venue of humble proportions, where a lineup featuring esteemed artists like J Rocc, Madlib, Dilla, and Common, alongside DOOM himself, was assembled with cautious optimism. Despite concerns about ticket sales, the event proved a success, setting the stage for additional shows in major markets, where eager crowds greeted the collaborators with fervent enthusiasm.
However, the album’s promotion remained refreshingly unpretentious, characterized by the DIY ethos that defined Stones Throw Records. Wolf reminisced about convincing DOOM to produce three low-budget music videos, a decision met with initial reluctance but ultimately contributing to the album’s lasting legacy. “Madvillainy” stands as a singular achievement in Stones Throw’s illustrious 28-year history, being the label’s first and only album to attain gold status.
In light of the album’s 20th anniversary, Madlib also paid homage to his late collaborator, MF DOOM, affectionately known as the Villain. Sharing a clip from the “All Caps” video on Instagram, Madlib marked the occasion with poignant simplicity, captioning it with the words “20 years. RIP to the Villain,” encapsulating the bittersweet reverence felt by fans worldwide.
As “Madvillainy” continues to captivate audiences with its timeless allure, its gold certification stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of MF DOOM and Madlib’s unparalleled musical partnership. With its innovative production, lyrical mastery, and genre-defying creativity, “Madvillainy” remains an indelible cornerstone of hip-hop history, ensuring that the legacy of the Villain lives on for generations to come.
